GPA and CGPA Calculation
Introduction
The Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) and Cumulative Grade
Point Average (CGPA) are metrics used to evaluate a student's academic
performance over a semester and throughout the entire academic program,
respectively. These calculations are based on the grades, grade points, and
credits associated with each course.
This guide explains the grading system, the formulas for calculating SGPA and CGPA, and the criteria for awarding degrees.
Grading System
SGPA and CGPA Formulas
1. Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA):
SGPA measures performance in a specific semester.
- CiC_i:
Number of credits for the ithi^{th} course.
- GiG_i: Grade point obtained in the ithi^{th} course.
2. Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA):
CGPA reflects overall performance across all semesters.
- CniC_{ni}:
Number of credits for the ithi^{th} course of the nthn^{th} semester.
- GniG_{ni}: Grade point obtained in the ithi^{th} course of the nthn^{th} semester.
Degree Classification
Based on CGPA, students are classified into divisions as
follows:
*Exemplary performance is awarded only if:
Additional Notes
- Percentage
Equivalence:
The CGPA can be converted into a percentage using the formula:
- Passing
Criteria:
A grade of "P" (Grade Point 4) is the minimum passing grade unless otherwise specified. - Audit
Courses:
Courses marked as "Audit" are not included in the SGPA and CGPA calculations.
Conditions for Awarding a Degree
A student is eligible for a degree if they meet the
following criteria:
- Successfully
complete all required courses, projects, and training within the
stipulated time.
- Clear
all dues to the institution.
- Have
no disciplinary actions pending.
- Achieve a CGPA equal to or higher than the minimum specified in the syllabus.
Example Calculations
SGPA Calculation:
Consider three courses with the following details:
- Course
1: Credits = 3, Grade = A+ (Grade Point = 9)
- Course
2: Credits = 4, Grade = B (Grade Point = 6)
- Course
3: Credits = 2, Grade = O (Grade Point = 10)
CGPA Calculation:
Consider two semesters with the following details:
- Semester
1: Total Credits = 10, SGPA = 7.5
- Semester
2: Total Credits = 12, SGPA = 8.0
